Choosing the right wedding DJ is one of the most crucial decisions in regards to the success of your wedding. As explained in our post featured on WeddingLovely.com, wedding DJs do much more than just play music. While this means you may be getting a lot more for your money than what you think, it also means there are more ways for your DJ to screw up.
To help you avoid some of the most common wedding DJ pitfalls, we’ve created a list of the top 10 caveats and what to do about them.
- DJ Doesn’t Show Up – This is probably the worst thing that could happen. Unfortunately, it does happen. There are many reasons why your DJ may not show up to your wedding. The most common cause I know of for DJs not showing up is they’re not getting paid enough. Sometimes I get calls at the last minute from brides who had their DJ back out not long before the wedding. Often
- DJ Gets Drunk – If you don’t want your DJ to drink, ask him not to drink.
- DJ is Dressed Inappropriately – Hopefully there’s a picture of your DJ on their website. You can see mine here.
- DJ Too Cheesy – Meet with your DJ in person. Or at least have a phone conversation with them. Get a feel for him and see if he suits your style.
- DJ Too Chatty – If you have a preference of how chatty your DJ is you should talk to him about it.
- Music Too Loud – Not everyone wants their wedding music to be real loud. If a DJ tends to play loud and you tend to be disturbed by loud music there might be a problem. The volume level should change throughout the day. Just tell your DJ if the music gets too loud.
- No one Dances – Ask your DJ how they get people dancing. Playing choreographed songs like the Cupid Shuffle will get most crowds dancing. That’s what we typically do, but it depends on the crowd.
- Bad Language/Sensitive Subjects – A wedding DJ shouldn’t use foul language. But if some
- Sound System Breaks Down – DJs should always bring a backup of all necessary equipment. It’s only a matter of time before something fails. If the DJ is prepared and has a backup, no problem!
- People Leave Early – This really does happen. Some times people leave after dinner. A good DJ will keep your guests entertained and remind them there’s lots happening later so they need to stick around and not miss it. This is why it’s important to save one of the formal events til later in the reception. Some times venues like to get all of the formal events taken care of as soon as possible so their staff can go home. Unfortunately, doing so can hurt the party. Another solution is to have some type of Grand Exit, like a sparkler exit.
