Weddings are once-in-a-lifetime events. You don’t get the chance to do them over. Because they’re so important you don’t want anything to go wrong, especially if you can help it. Here are 3 caveats to look for when planning your wedding date:
- Holidays
- Sports Games
- Local Events
Holidays
Look on the calendar and see if your wedding date falls on a holiday before committing to that date. You may or may not want your wedding to fall on a holiday. Either way, it’s best to know so you can make an informed decision.
Even if your wedding date doesn’t fall on a holiday, it could be affected by a holiday if it’s the same weekend. If some of your guests will be out of town visiting family for the holiday weekend, some important people may not be able to make it to your wedding.
Sports Games
You may want to consider any big sports games that fall on your wedding day. I’ve seen groomsmen crowded around a TV in another room while the wedding reception was going on. And it doesn’t even have to be the Super Bowl game!
If your fiancé and his friends are big sports fanatics, this is definitely something to consider. Unless you’re also a sports lover and would enjoy watching the big game on your big day, you don’t want distractions keeping your guests away from your special day.
Local Events
Local events can unexpectedly conflict with your wedding day. Whether you’re getting married in your hometown or having a destination wedding, find out what’s going on in the city you’re getting married in on your wedding day. Be aware of events that go on near your wedding.
Lots of things can interfere with your big day. If you’re not from the place you’re getting married, you’ll probably have no idea what events go on during that time of year. Ask your venue and coordinator if there’s anything that may conflict on your wedding date. This is especially important if you’re having a wedding video made because noise also has to be taken into account.
One time I was shooting a wedding ceremony when an air show began. Though the wedding couple lived in the area their whole lives, they forgot about the annual air show and didn’t realize it would fall on their wedding date. During the ceremony there were airplanes flying overhead! The noise was so loud they had to keep stopping the ceremony. Needless to say, it didn’t sound good on video either.
Besides noise, traffic can affect the outcome of your wedding. If you’re traveling from the ceremony to reception venue, getting stuck in traffic could delay your reception. Parking may be full too. Taking a little extra time to do your due diligence may end up saving your special day.
